Sliding vs bi-fold doors: how to choose
Sliders keep big fixed panes and a flat threshold; bi-folds clear almost the whole opening but stack in a concertina. The right choice depends on the view you want and the space you have.
What each one does best
A sliding door moves panels behind one another, so you keep large fixed panes of glass and a clean, flat threshold. It is quieter to use day to day and looks most seamless when closed. A bi-fold folds its panels away like a concertina, clearing almost the entire opening, best when you want the wall to genuinely disappear for entertaining.
The trade-offs
- View when closed: sliders win, fewer, larger panes and slimmer sightlines. Bi-folds show more frame.
- Opening width: bi-folds clear more of the opening; sliders always keep one fixed pane.
- Stacking space: bi-folds need somewhere for the folded stack to sit; sliders do not.
- Threshold: both can be low, but sliders tend to be simplest for step-free access.
A quick way to decide
If an uninterrupted view and everyday ease matter most, lean slider. If fully opening the wall for gatherings matters most, lean bi-fold. Our sliding-vs-bi-fold chooser walks you through it in a minute, and you can compare the products on slim sliding doors and bi-fold doors.
