Sliding door & window repair

A sliding door should glide with one hand. When it drags, sticks, rattles or jumps the track, the cause is usually rollers, the track or alignment, and it is often repairable without replacing the door.

Sound familiar?

  • Drags, sticks or needs two hands / a shove to move
  • Noisy, grinding or rumbling as it slides
  • Jumps or comes off the track (derailed)
  • Feels like you are lifting the door, not sliding it
  • Draughts, dust or water getting past the seals

Likely causes

Worn, flat-spotted or seized rollers

The most common cause of dragging and grinding, the wheels wear or seize.

Dirty or damaged track

Sand, grit and debris pack the track; the running surface can also dent.

Misalignment / dropped panel

The door sits out of square, so it binds or lifts on the track.

Perished brush seals / gaskets

Old seals let dust, draughts and water past and add friction.

Safety: A derailed or very heavy sliding panel can be a crush or drop hazard, do not force it or try to lift a large glass panel back onto the track yourself. If the glass is cracked, keep people clear and mention it in your enquiry.

What a photo tells us

Send a clear photo and we can usually gauge:

  • Which system and roughly what size and weight the panel is
  • Visible track damage, debris or corrosion
  • Whether the panel is sitting square or dropped
  • The state of the seals and any obvious broken hardware

Repair or replace?

If the frame and glass are sound, new rollers, a cleaned or repaired track and fresh seals usually restore smooth operation for far less than replacement. If the frame is corroded or the glass is failed, we will say so and quote a like-for-like replacement instead, see slim sliding doors.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Usually yes. A derailed door is often worn rollers or a damaged track rather than a write-off. Do not force it back yourself, especially with heavy glass, send a photo and we will assess.

Most often worn or seized rollers, sometimes a dirty track or a dropped panel. Replacing the rollers and cleaning or repairing the track typically restores an easy glide.

If the frame and glass are sound, repair is usually far cheaper. We only recommend replacement when the frame or glass has genuinely failed, and we tell you which case you are in.
